Danton
Danton · dir. Andrzej Wajda
France, Poland, Federal Republic of Germany 1982, 136’
Revolutionary France is plagued by terror. It is 1793. At the meeting of the Committee of Public Safety Billaud Varenne accuses Danton and his friends of anti-revolutionary activity. Although Robespierre does not agree to try Danton, other members of the Committee keep coming up with new arguments against him. At the same time, ‘Vieux Cordelier’ ― the newspaper supporting Danton’s ideas edited by Desmoulins, is confiscated. Soon Danton is confidentially warned that the government is going to arrest him.
